EchoMRI? Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Body Composition Analyzers for animals and humans take direct measurements of total body fat, lean mass, free water, and total body water. The measurement principle depends on the density of hydrogen nuclei and the physical state of the tissue.

More rapid, accurate, and precise than other methods, EchoMRI? technology allows for fast measurements (about 1min for mice and rats and less than 3min for humans) in vivo without anesthesia or sedation. Unlike DEXA, Echo measurements are radiation-free, do not require the subject to remain still, and in a peer-reviewed study yielded 24 times DEXA's precision facilitating convenient, low-stress repeated tracking of small changes in body composition. Moreover, Echo instruments measure fat and lean mass as an independent characteristics, unlike DEXA, which measures the fat to lean ratio and is, therefore, prone to error propagation from lean to fat. The systems are much less expensive than conventional MRI, are completely silent, and do not require advanced training to use.

The EchoMRI? proprietary method for tissue characterization provides measurements of whole body composition parameters: fat mass, lean tissue mass, free water, and total body water. Q. Does the machine generate heat? If so, how much?
A. The device has five core components: a magnet, sensor assembly, analog electronics, digital electronics, and an LCD monitor. The Rat/Mouse magnets are permanent, not electromagnets, and, therefore, generate no heat. The Adult Human magnet is an electromagnet but generates a relatively small amount of heat, equal to a computer workstation. The operation of the antenna assembly generates a negligible amount of heat. The analog electronics box generates a small amount of heat so that the box does not even need a fan. The most heat generated by the instrument comes from the digital electronics, which has a standard computer-type fan that exhausts about as much heat as a typical personal computer or a typical light bulb. A. No special shielding is required. For the Rat/ Mouse/ 3-in-1 systems, the magnetic field induction is less than 5 X 10-4T, excluding volume that is less than 9" (0.2m) from the gantry. The Adult Human system has a 5-gauss field that extends approximately 65"/ 26cm from the magnet covers.

Precision: Precision of fat measurement by EchoMRI? in mice i about 25 times higher than DEXA. This higher precision allows researchers to reduce considerably the number of treated subjects and controls during drug development and testing.

 

Sensitivity: The high sensitivity of EchoMRI? allows less compound to be administered for each animal while achieving a measurable response. Statistically significant detection of differences of small magnitude in body composition allows the dose of a tested compound to be reduced, and therefore, substantially reduces its toxicity effect.

 

Specificity: The high specificity of EchoMRI? technology isolates and focuses on the accurate measurement of fat content instead of less relevant non-disease parameters, such as body weight or nonfat masses. The specificity of EchoMRI? measurement is based on molecular physical principals, unlike any of its competitors, and unlike DEXA, all measured parameters are easy to interpret.

 

Accuracy: The EchoMRI? whole body composition analyzer is designed to provide high accuracy for screening, while DEXA and other technologies have low accuracy capabilities. On the other hand, with DEXA, subjective threshold values can cause subjective results. Live and dead animals have large differences in values. The equipment cannot be calibrated against *** fat or lean, introducing errors. The fat and lean in the head is omitted from results, and the spine core fat is under-detected. On a DEXA projection, 40% of the image is covered by bone, so there are large errors in fat and lean measurements.

 

No Need for Anesthesia or Sedation: EchoMRI? measurement of moving bodies is non-invasive, with no anesthesia or sedation required. Animals are able to move freely. Thus, having no need for anesthesia or sedation saves time and reduces the 2-day impact on animal behavior from gas or injected anesthesia required for DEXA.

 

Fast Measurements: The measuring technique is optimized for the maximum measuring precision of whole body fat, muscle, and body fluids, while keeping the total measurement time to about one minute for rats and mice. With DEXA, the time of measurement is 5 minutes, and preparation and recovery for each animal can take up to 2 days.

 

Safety: The static magnetic field is completely shielded and this prevents containment issues in the outside and internal environment, including the internal shielding of radio frequency (RF) magnetic and electrical fields. DEXA x- ray equipment requires adherence to regulations.
